‘There’s the smoke alarm’, my landlord pointed out, as my boyfriend and I walked down the corridor to our newly-rented flat in Sheffield, before adding ‘If it goes off on a Sunday, or, you know, in the middle of the night… don’t call me. I’m not going to come round.’
