Somewhere Places is an environment-themed project, engaging communities in four disregarded places across North England, in an effort to show how all environments are equally worth saving from the climate emergency.

It’s the result of a process in which the participants worked with Stevie Ronnie and Steve Dearden not just to come up with the idea, but also learned how to develop, produce and fund it. We’re thrilled that using the plans and wording devised by the group, Stevie made a successful application Arts Council England for £30k, which with match funding from the Squad, means that the project is already underway.

Viv Burgess is producing an environmental activity programme and literary installation for her local community in Silksworth Lakes, Sunderland – workshops led by local artists are taking place in early October.

Daisy Costello has hiked along the Holderness Coast, Europe’s most rapidly eroding coastline, and is in the process of creatively documenting her journey for a zine.

Finlay Worrallo will soon be completing two writing residencies at a Northumberland lumber forest and paper mill, blogging about his experience and then producing a book using recycled paper to explore our complex relationship with trees.

Ruth Yates is collaborating with the Woodhouse Prize Band community and a sound artist in Sheffield’s green and brownfield spaces, working towards a multidisciplinary performance.

And Lara Mae Simpson is producing the project alongside Steve and Stevie – we’re making great progress and soon our website and socials will be up and running!
