Isolated in the High Peak in North Derbyshire as a youngster makes it really hard to get access to a good start to a literary career. Nevertheless Sian Hughes started writing poetry and found the Writing Squad at a young age. Attending York University to study English Literature, then Leeds – for an MA in ‘Writing for Performance and Publication’ she now lives and writes in London.
Sian currently works for a Theatre in Education company called Freshwater Theatre, marketing their workshops and shows – so that primary age children are always filled up with stories. This day job sits well with her current practice as she is writing a novel for slightly older children, based on the folklores of the British Isles. When not marketing or working on the novel, Sian writes mostly prose and some poetic prose but is also editing work for peers, including plays, and wishes to enter a career in publishing in editorial or marketing – when an opportunity arises.
Sian’s writing focuses on what she feels connected to and passionate about. Having worked for over a year in Scotland – Northernness, fantasy, folklore and mythology are strong themes in both of the novels she is currently working on.
