SUMMARY:THE AWESOME PLAY TEXT / SCREENPLAY READING CLUB
DESCRIPTION:During this meet up we will be discussing The Funeral Director by Iman Qureshi. We will send you a script or you can buy it from Nick Hern Books. \nLife as the director of a Muslim funeral parlour isn’t always easy\, but Ayesha has things pretty sorted. She and Zeyd share everything: a marriage\, a business\, a future. \nUntil Tom walks in to organise his boyfriend’s funeral. A snap moral decision\, informed by the values of Ayesha’s community and faith\, has profound consequences. \nForced to confront a secret she has hidden even from herself\, Ayesha must decide who she is – no matter the cost. \nAn incisive and heartfelt story of sexuality\, gender and religion in twenty-first-century Britain. It won the 2018 Papatango New Writing Prize and premiered at Southwark Playhouse\, London\, in October 2018. \nWhat to expect at Awesome P&SPR Club? \nThe zoom is informal and relaxed. No one is put on the spot. We tend to look at the text from 3 positions: \nHow did it make you feel / think as a reader? \nWhat kind of themes/ideas is it exploring (so a kind of Eng Lit pov)? \nWhat kind of ideas/tools does it give to you as a writer? \nThat’s it. If that sounds like your kind of thing\, then Matt and Emma will be delighted to see you on the night.
