After I Died at the Level Centre

After I Died is a multimedia visual arts exhibition created by Katie (Tom) Walters, taking place at the Level Arts Centre throughout April and June 2022.

“In 2017, Katie was given a book by a well-meaning relative, in response to their diagnosis with a serious chronic illness. Gated behind a strict regimen of extreme lifestyle changes and a prescription of positive thinking, the book contained a promise of recovery.

In the present, they pull the book apart, breaking down its harmful rhetoric, and reshaping it into a personal narrative of self growth and disability pride.”

This free exhibition explores the pressure placed on newly sick people to focus on recovery, and the power of radical acceptance.
