Asking A Masc Lesbian To Open A Jar

At this year’s Sheba Festival, Jack and Nara have been commissioned to write and perform a new piece of work responding to the theme of the festival ‘Still We Rise’. A short play-in-verse exploring colonial and decolonial gender in a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek manner.

“With the government attempting to legislate people out of public life, we believe in the power of taking the piss a little bit. Laughter can be louder than fear. We wanted to tell stories from our respective backgrounds and speak freed from colonial prescriptions of masculinity and femininity. It’s also important to celebrate all the ways people get to express themselves, and probe our histories for wisdom.”

The evening starts at 7 with an open mic, followed by the play starting at 8.30, and finishing with live Turkish folk and sufi music by Gulcin Bulut.
